The Conception of the Crimson Guard
In a carriage between Paris and Versailles after a rather agressive speech before the Assemblee by the then First Lady, in the second year of their marriage.
CORWIN: This may be why my desired center echoes someplace I was content in a past seperated from such Powers; why the Kingdom is called Argent and not Sable. Names have power, but Dara would need answer why she called him Merlin. Perhaps it was just a name that appealed to her ears, or perhaps she didn't even name him, but the masters of her experiment did. Maybe she's a fan of Mary Stewart or T.H. White or Borel came across the name when investigating me and my ability as a swordsman.
[He smiles wryly.] There are many things that Dara has neglected to tell me or even answer when asked. Merlin's name isn't something I spent time dwelling on.
FRANCESCA: Sable should be what you name your first order of knights. Knights of the Order of the Sable.
CORWIN: [laughs] Because every King needs a full cadre of 'Black Knights', don't they? I suppose it's better than an order of Green Knights; of course there's days that in Paris I think I could field a legion of them if green referred to jealousy and envy.
FRANCESCA: If you're going to bother having knights, they may as well be killers. I will have the crimson regiment. Lance can have the lancers. [she laughs, leans toward CORWIN across the carriage] What say you?
CORWIN: And to which Order do I assign the politicos that need some official recognition for their extrordinary display of self-restraint in the face of unreasonable requests from their sovereign's foreign lover?
FRANCESCA: [sits back tiredly, but with a mean smile] Make them white knights. Oh, the irony. [sighs]
